Chinese Beets

6 cup beets, canned or fresh, cooked & sl; iced
1 1/2 cup beet liquid
1 cup sugar
1 cup vinegar
2 tablespoon cornstarch
24 whole cloves
3 tablespoon catsup
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 tablespoon corn or vegetable oil
Mix all ingredients, except beets. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Add beets and cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let cool, then store in refrigerator until used.
